Elderberry, Dormant Cuttings

Will will be including two varieties to ensure good pollination and biodiversity to your elderberry plants. One Variety will be Ranch and the other will be a selection chosen by us from the list of varieties below. The two varieties will be marked and can be planted together or seperated by up to 60 feet if you would like to keep them seperate.

American Black Elderberry (Sambucus Nigra; canadensis) cuttings, available in these selections:

  • Adams - a vigorous and productive indeterminate variety from 1926, features tall growth, abundant flowers, large clusters of small berries, and reliably ripens late.

  • Ranch - Ranch is a vigorous, heavy-yielding, strongly determinate variety that roots quickly, establishes fast, thrives in poor soils, resists drought, ripens early, and performs best with a pollinator companion like Kent, Berry Hill, Nova, or Victoria.

  • York - York, a 1926 cross of Ezyoff and Adams 2, is a vigorous, long-lasting variety that produces large, heavy clusters of deep red berries, ripening mid-to-late season.

  • Berry Hill -  a top three most vigorous S. canadensis variety, is extremely cold-hardy, highly productive, early-ripening, and the most alkaline-tolerant, with large deep red berries in bird-resistant, decumbent clusters.

  • Coomer - Similar to Berry Hill

  • Wild American Black Elderberry mix Sambucus Nigra; canadensis

    • (non specific cultivars)

 

ABOUT YOUR CUTTINGS:

  • With elderberry cuttings from Popple Tree Creek Farms you can be assured they have come from a disease free environment from plants we grow on our own farm.

  • Cuttings will be shipped in bags with moist sphagnum moss.

  • You may keep cuttings in your refrigerator until your ground is thawed and you're ready to plant.  WE RECOMMEND PLANTING AS EARLY IN THE SEASON AS YOU CAN, DORMANT CUTTINGS WANT TO BE STARTED IN COLD WEATHER, NOT WARM (AND NOT INDOORS).

  • Planting instruction will come with your cuttings.

 Elderberries known as Sambucus Nigra, canadensis:

  • Fruit-bearing shrubs native to the US that.

  • Grow up to 5’-15' tall in full sun or part shade.

  • Prefer moist soil enriched with organic material and a pH of 5.5-7.5.

  • Can survive without irrigation but optimally require 1-2" of water per week

  • Do not require cross-pollination, but benefit from planting two or more selections

  • Rich in antioxidants and flavonoids, making them beneficial for the immune system and reducing inflammation.

  • Consider growing elderberries in your garden for their numerous benefits.


About Popple Tree Creek Farms elderberry cutting varieties:

  • Adams 2

    • Early ripening with very large clusters of purplish/black berries.  

    • Sweeter than most elderberries and somewhat self-fruitful.  

    • One of the oldest cultivars from New York.  

    • These plants are tall with excellent yields.

    • Adams typically grow between 8 and 10 feet tall.

    • Indeterminate

  • Ranch

    • This hardy short plant seems to be most tolerant to harsh conditions. The stockiness provides a lower fruiting canopy for those short pickers. Single stemmed. Tends to grow upright and is not bushy.

    • One of the strongest elderberry cultivars, very woody and grows well on less fertile soils.

    • Grows 5 to 6 feet tall.

    • Determinate

  • York 

    • Determinate

    • York grows around 6-10' Tall

    • York do best in northern US States, in colder climates.  But can grow anywhere and is a good polinator because berries show early but stay long enough for Adams

  • Berry Hill  & Coomer

    • These two varieties have very similar growth characteristics

    • This exceptionally cold-hardy and productive variety matures early and evenly, producing stunning clusters of large, deep red berries.
    • Its decumbent cymes provide increased resistance to birds.

    • Is one of the most vigorous Sambucus canadensis varieties, it stands out as the most tolerant of poor or alkaline soils.

  • Wild American Black Elderberry

    • A vigorous mix of American Black Elderberry selections from the wild. 

    • Cuttings included may be determinant and indeterminate selections.

    • Proven to produce fruit on first year canes.

    • May be determinant, indeterminate or semi determinant.

    • Cymesm maybe decumbant or non decumbant

    • Grows 6 to 10 feet tall.
