The Full Story
Ben Machlitt
First-generation elderberry farmer | Veteran | Entrepreneur | Educator
Ben is a first-generation elderberry farmer and the founder of Popple Tree Creek Farms, a family-owned business in Northern Minnesota dedicated to growing and crafting premium elderberry products. With 5 acres of thriving elderberry orchards in Zone 3b, he cultivates over 20 varieties of American Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), using sustainable and regenerative practices that restore the land while producing only the highest-quality American ELderberry.
A U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran, Ben brings the same discipline, resilience, and leadership that defined his military service into farming, entrepreneurship, and public speaking. He is also a proud husband to Kori Machlitt of 20 years and father of two daughters Amelia and Caroline —family values remain at the heart of his work.
What began as a small homestead project grew into a thriving business that now produces a wide range of elderberry-based products, from health and wellness syrups and teas to skincare and freeze-dried snacks. Built from the ground up, Popple Tree Creek Farms relies heavily on innovative marketing strategies and social media storytelling, making Ben an engaging voice for farm-to-market entrepreneurship, agricultural resilience, and authentic branding.
Today, he is recognized as both a farmer and educator, sharing expertise on:
