Does Elderberry Tea Actually Help? Benefits, Ingredients, and How to Get the Most Out of It

I get this question a lot.

Does elderberry tea actually do anything… or is it just a nice warm drink that tastes good?

The short answer is that it can help, but it really depends on how you’re using it, and what’s actually in your cup.

I talk a lot about elderberry syrup here, and how important it is to choose the right brand if you want actual results. And it's the same situation for teas, because not all elderberry tea is the same. And once you understand that, it starts to make a lot more sense why some people swear by it… and others don’t notice much at all.

Does elderberry tea actually help?

Elderberry tea is commonly used to support the immune system and soothe things like sore throats, especially during cold and flu season.

But here’s the honest answer: It’s not magic, and it’s not all created equal.

A light tea made from a small amount of elderberry is going to be very different from something more concentrated, or something paired with other supportive herbs.

Think of it more like a tool you can use in different ways, depending on what you need.

What is elderberry tea, really?

This is where a lot of the confusion starts.

“Elderberry tea” can mean a few different things:

  • A homemade tea made from dried elderberries

  • blended tea with elderberry plus other herbs

  • Or even tea with elderberry syrup added to it

All three show up under the same name, but they’re not the same experience.

Some are lighter and more for daily use. Some are stronger. Some are more about flavor, others about function.

And one thing that makes a bigger difference than most people realize is where the elderberries actually come from.

The elderberries in our blends are grown right here on our farm in Northern Minnesota. We’re not sourcing from overseas or buying bulk ingredients. We’re starting with our own harvest.

That means we can control everything from field to cup: harvesting at peak ripeness, carefully drying the berries, and preserving the deep color and antioxidants that make elderberry what it is.

Does elderberry tea help with colds and flu?

This is probably the most common reason people reach for elderberry.

Elderberries have been traditionally used to support the immune system, especially during cold and flu season.

A warm cup of elderberry tea can be a simple way to support your body, especially when you’re already feeling run down. But it's most effective when taken as part of your daily routine.

We love drinking a hot cup of our Deep Breath Tea when we are feeling congested.

If you’re looking for something stronger, this is also where a lot of people will add elderberry syrup to their tea for a more concentrated option.

Does elderberry tea help with sore throat?

A lot of people find elderberry tea especially helpful when dealing with a sore throat.

Part of that is just the warmth of the tea itself, warm liquids can be soothing.

But elderberries are also rich in antioxidants, and when combined with ingredients like honey or herbal blends, it can make for a really comforting drink when your throat feels irritated.

Does elderberry tea help you sleep?

On its own, elderberry isn’t really a sleep aid.

But we have and elderflower tea that's blended with calming herbs like chamomile, lemon balm, or tulsi in our new Night Time Ritual tea.

.

Those are traditionally used to help the body relax and wind down.

So it’s less about elderberry “making you sleepy” and more about the overall blend creating a calming evening ritual.

What you add to elderberry tea changes the benefits

This is one of the biggest things people don’t realize.

Elderberry on its own is great, but what you combine it with can completely change what the tea feels like and how you use it.

Here are the ingredients that why add to our teas, and why they matter:

🌺 Hibiscus

Adds a tart flavor and is packed with antioxidants. Often paired with elderberry in tea blends.

🌼 Elderflower

Comes from the same plant as elderberries, but works a little differently. Traditionally used for respiratory support and has a more calming feel.

🌿 Mullein

Commonly used in herbal blends for lung and breathing support.

🌲 Spruce tips

A unique ingredient with vitamin C and a bright, fresh flavor.

🍃 Mint + Orange Peel

These don’t just taste good. They help balance digestion and round out the tea.

🍵 White Tea

Our elderberry hibiscus tea include a small amount of white tea, which means a little caffeine. Not much, but worth knowing if you’re drinking it at night.

👉 The big takeaway: Not all elderberry tea is created equal. The ingredients matter.

Not only do the added ingredients matter, but the quality of the elderberries themselves does too.

A lot of elderberry products on the market use imported berries or pre-processed ingredients, which can vary quite a bit in quality.

Starting with elderberries grown and handled on a single farm gives you a level of consistency that’s hard to get otherwise.

Elderberry vs elderflower: what’s the difference?

This is another question I get a lot.

  • Elderberries are the heavy hitter—packed with antioxidants and widely studied for immune support.

  • Elderflower is more subtle, traditionally used to support the respiratory system and promote calm. While it hasn’t been researched as extensively, emerging studies and long-standing herbal use point to impressive antioxidant and immune-supporting properties.

That balance is exactly why we bring them together—especially in teas finished with elderflower-infused honey.

Does elderberry tea have caffeine?

Our elderberry hibiscus tea has a small amount of caffeine in it, due to the white tea that we add. But our Night Time Ritual and Deep Breath Teas are naturally caffeine-free.

So if you’re drinking it in the evening, it’s worth checking the ingredients.

How to get the most benefit from elderberry tea

This is where things really start to matter.

Because how you prepare or use elderberry makes a difference.

Option 1: Tea blends (easy, everyday use)

This is the simplest way to start.

  • Convenient

  • Consistent

  • Good for daily support

If you’re just building a routine, this is a great place to begin. Check out the tea blends that we make.

Option 2: Add elderberry syrup to your tea

This is one of my favorite ways to use it.

You get:

  • the warmth and comfort of tea

  • plus a more concentrated dose of elderberry

If I feel something coming on, this is usually where I go.

Option 3: Make your own from dried elderberries

If you like doing things yourself, this gives you the most control.

  • You can adjust strength

  • You can customize ingredients

  • You can make larger batches

It takes a little more effort, but it’s a great option if you want something stronger and more hands-on. Here's our recipe for making elderberry tea from dried elderberries at home.

Is it better to make your own or buy it?

It really depends on what you’re looking for.

  • Homemade can be stronger if you’re using enough berries and preparing it properly

  • Pre-made blends are more convenient and consistent

  • Tea bags tend to be lighter overall

There’s no one “best” option, just different ways to use it.

Does adding elderberry honey to tea actually do anything?

Short answer: yes… but it’s more of a boost than the main source.

It depends on how concentrated the elderberry is in the honey, but in most cases:

  • It adds flavor

  • It adds a mild layer of support

  • It’s not as strong as syrup or whole berries

  • You get the benefits of raw, unfiltered honey

I think of it as a simple way to build on what you’re already drinking, not replace it.

If you’re deciding how to use elderberry tea…

Here’s a simple way to think about it:

  • Drink tea → for daily support and routine

  • Add syrup → when you want something stronger

  • Use dried berries → if you like making your own

So… is elderberry tea worth drinking?

If you’re expecting it to be a cure-all, probably not.

But if you’re using it intentionally, as part of your routine, or as something you reach for when you feel run down, it can absolutely be helpful.

And honestly, part of it is just the ritual.

Slowing down, making a cup of tea, taking a minute for yourself… that matters too.

Where to start

If you’re choosing between options, it’s not just about the format, it’s also about the source.

Starting with elderberries that are grown, harvested, and handled with care makes a noticeable difference in both flavor and overall quality.

Then for your teas try these:

  • Start with a simple tea blend

  • Try adding syrup if you want something stronger

  • Or experiment with dried berries if you want to make your own
